2008-2009 Program

The Kanata Racers ski program is for teen skiers who want to improve their skiing technique, both classical and skate, while pursuing a higher level of fitness and proficiency in the sport. Participants follow a comprehensive year-round training program customized to meet individual goals. The coaches provide feedback on an individual basis. Many opportunities exist for various levels of competition and travel. Past members of the racing team have reached national and international calibre including Kate Brennan, a former Kanata Racer, in her second year at the National Team Development Centre in Thunder Bay.

The Kanata Racers program focuses on training to develop strength and speed, aerobic capacity, ski skills and technique, and mental, cognitive, and emotional skills for ski racing. Emphasis is on planning and preparing for a best individual performance at one event during the season while maintaining emphasis on group interaction, team building and social skills. Events covered include individual sprint, team sprint, mass start, interval start, relays, and age appropriate long and short distance races. Technical skills are developed to deal with competitive situations in these events.

Program Times and Locations: Athletes follow a year round individualized training program. Participants are expected to train individually and in group sessions. The training sessions are generally run in Kanata and the Gatineau Park on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Dryland Training: Starting in May and running through August, group training occurs on one weeknight and one weekend morning per week. In September group training sessions double to two weeknight and two weekend sessions. Weeknight sessions are 90 minutes and weekend sessions are 2-4 hours.

On Snow Training: Weeknight sessions are in the dark, generally in the southern end of Gatineau Park. Weekend sessions are on the trails in Gatineau Park. Participation in the local race series is encouraged and when appropriate other races throughout Ontario and Quebec are also added.
