Five Kanata Racers went to the Canadian Junior National Championships in Cross Country Skiing during March break this year.  This was the culmination of a complete racing season in which all skiers raced in the 8 races of the Onario Cup series in a variety of venues throughout the province.  After accumulation of points in this series, 3 of our racers (Sven Niederhauser, Lisa McVicar and Julie McVicar) made the Ontario Development team.

This team in comprised of the top 44 skiers in all age groups across the province.  These three skiers in addition to Jessica Blenkarn and Danielle McVicar competed at the elite level representing Ontario at the Nationals.  We are very proud of our racers as our very small team came 17th overall out of the 67 participating teams in Canada!

Some highlights of the Nationals were:  the Challenge girls relay with Lisa, Julie and Danielle McVicar was mentioned as a first "family" relay at Nationals and came 5th overall; Sven Niederhauser came 8th in Junior boys in the combined pursuit; Julie McVicar came 7th in Juvenile girls the classic sprints; Danielle McVicar came 12th in the classic portion of the combined pursuit, and Lisa McVicar came 10th in the 10K skate race.

None of this could have been accomplished without the complete dedication and expertise of our coach, Heinz Niederhauser.

FEBRUARY 1, 2004
I have met many club members enjoying the groomed NCC trails at Corkstown road and Timm road trailheads.  Special thanks to Mike Duivenvoorden, our Jackrabbit co-ordinator/trails co-ordinator for persevering in the negotiations with the NCC, the campground authority and the City of Ottawa who provided the funds for the grooming.  The success of this endevour has been announced in the Kanata Kourier-Standard, with special thanks to Harris Kirby.  I also picked up a City of Ottawa pamphlet on cross country skiing at the Mooney's Bay ski centre where the NCC advertises well marked groomed ski trails in both the east and west end of Ottawa thanks to the efforts of both the Orleans club and the Kanata Club.

JANUARY 22, 2004
To all Kanata Cross-Country Ski Club JackRabbit parents,

It seems that one pair of children's XC skis were accidentally switched with another similar looking pair during the lesson on January 17 - probably at break time. Could you please check your children's skis to see if they match the description of the "lost" skis below?

Found: one pair of Splitkein Lillehammer STEP skis 160 cm in length, rented/purchased from Fresh Air Experience.

Lost: one pair of Splitkein Lillehammer STEP skis, less than 160 cm (140 perhaps?) rented from Trailhead.

If you have the "lost" skis, and think the "found" skis are yours, please phone me at 599-9511, or email me at jstring@magma.ca, and I will arrange for you to contact the owner of the lost skis to arrange for an exchange.

May I also suggest to all parents that you label your childrens' skis? If you don't want to blemish the finish of the skis with a black marker, you can stick a white mailing label on the ski and then write on that.

Thanks very much,
James Stringham
JackRabbit leader level 1 ("Green Twisters")

  2. 417 to Rochester exit, cross Rochester, and turn left onto Booth, follow Booth across the bridge at the Domtar Mill, first left onto Tache', follow Tache' and turn right onto Scott (just past the Shell Station), follow Lac des Fees Parkway, this road turns into Cite' des Jeunnes.

  3. Take King Edward across the Bridge to Hwy 5 in Gatineau, exit to Mont Bleu, take Mont Bleu west to tee intersection, turn right and the CEGEP will be on your left.

Costs: Day passes for adults and children over 12 are available at the entrance to the trails.

What to Bring: Dress for the weather. We will be outside for 2 hours or more, skiing on trails. There are areas of the trails that are sheltered by the wind but there are also areas not sheltered. A snack and something to drink. (There are not stop points or washrooms on the trails)

What will we be doing: Check with your leader. Each group may have its own plans but the intent is to ski the trails. We may throw in some lessons along the way.

Safety: Arrange a buddy system that every child has a buddy or two. Insure that there is one adult for no more than four children and that group stays together at all times. For everyone's protection an adult cannot be alone with a child unless that adult is the child's parent. When skiing trails arrange ahead of time for the entire group to meet at interval points. Do not head down side trails or turn back without letting the group leader know.

X-C Skiers,
For you last minute shoppers, here is a 50K [or 25K] X-C race just south of Watertown, NY.  I know this is a late notice, but with close to 3 feet of snow and trails in excellent shape, this Classic race might be a nice way to spend Saturday, February 7th.  It's only a week away, so look it up on our web site at: www.tughillskiclub.com .  I hope some of you can make it.
Dave

p.s. Next winter will be our 25th anniversary; see you then for sure.
